Weekend Spotlight: Aug. 11-13, 2017

Here are some highlights of the weekend ahead. For free (or nearly free) fun in the water, check out the Go West Splash Park Guide. Fairs & Festivals

Various: If your family is up for a spur-of-the-moment road trip, the Wisconsin State Fair is entering its last weekend in West Allis (near Milwaukee) while the Illinois State Fair is just getting started in Springfield. A little bit closer to home is the Mendota Sweet Corn Festival through Sunday. And right here in the Fox Valley is Montgomery Fest.

Dates: The Wisconsin State Fair ends Aug. 13. The Illinois State Fair continues through Aug. 20. The Mendota Sweet Corn Festival continues through Sunday. Montgomery Fest is being held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with fireworks on Sunday night.

Cost: Check here for the Wisconsin State Fair, here for the Illinois State Fair. There are no admission fees or parking fees at the Mendota Sweet Corn Festival. It appears Montgomery Fest is free admission too, other than the carnival area.

 

Summer Nights at Brookfield Zoo

Brookfield: This is the last weekend to catch Summer Nights at Brookfield Zoo, during which the zoo is open late, there are live musical and children’s performances plus special concessions and roaming entertainers.

Dates: Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Event details here.

Cost: Children under 3: Free. Children 3-11: $11.95. Adults: $16.95. Seniors 65+: $11.95.

 

Kane County Cougars

Geneva: The Kane County Cougars have a home-stand at Northwestern Medicine Field through Sunday. On Friday and Saturday, they’ll take on the Wisconsin TimberRattlers at 6:30 p.m., and on Sunday, the TimberRattlers again at 1 p.m. The evening games feature fireworks after the games as well as other promotions (Friday night is Harry Potter Night, for instance.)

Dates: Friday, Aug. 11 through Sunday, Aug. 13. Game times vary. Event details here.

Civil War Days

Aurora: Blackberry Farm will commemorate the 152nd anniversary of the American Civil War’s end this weekend with “Civil War Days.” It will be highlighted by a full-scale reenactment, featuring simulated battles between Union and Confederate soldiers, on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. You can also “Meet the Lincolns” each day from noon to 4 p.m. There will be demonstrations showing how wool and fabric were dyed for troop uniforms and crafts such as corn husk dolls. All of the farm’s regular amenities will be available, too.

Dates: Saturday, Aug. 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 13, from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. Event details here and find a full schedule of events here.

Cost: Civil War Days is included with regular Blackberry Farm admission, which for non-residents of the Fox Valley Park District is $7 for children/seniors, $8 for adults with kids under 2 free. Residents pay $4.50 for children/seniors and $5 for adults.

 

Concert at Cantigny 

Wheaton: Cantigny Park will continue its afternoon concert series this weekend with a performance by the R Gang playing R&B music on Saturday.

Dates: Saturday, Aug. 12, at 3 p.m. Event details here.

Cost: Included with the regular $10 weekend parking fee.

 

French Connection Day

Wheaton: Cantigny Park is celebrating its annual French Connection Day on Sunday. Attractions and activities will include a French Open Air Market, can-can dancers, a strolling mime, accordionist and vocalist, a kids’ craft (extra $3), storytime with Madeline and photo ops with a 23-foot Eiffel Tower.

Dates: Sunday, Aug. 13, from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Event details here.

Cost: Included with the regular $10 weekend parking fee.

 

Fun at Arlington Park

Arlington Heights: Sundays in the summer are a “Family Day Sundays” at Arlington International Racetrack in Arlington Heights. The “Junior Jockey Zone” will feature pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting, magician, juggler and hands-on activities.

Date: Sunday, August 13, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Event details here.
