Summer Guide 2012: Farmers Markets in Chicago’s Western Suburbs

Are you ready to snap up some fresh fruits and veggies, and perhaps treat yourself to a bouquet of flowers, too? Here’s our 2012 Guide to Farmers Markets in Chicago’s far western suburbs. * The Aurora Farmers Market West is being held on Wednesdays, starting July 11. It runs from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will close for the season Sept. 12. 

* The Aurora Farmers Market East is being held on Wednesdays, starting July 11. It runs from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will close for the season Sept. 12.

* The South Elgin Farmers Market is held on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. from June 6 through Sept. 19. You’ll find locally grown fruits, vegetables and a variety of other goods.

  • Location: Flower Wagon Garden & Nursery Center, 989 W. Spring St., South Elgin, IL.
  • Hours: 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

* The Warrenville Farmers Market is scheduled for Wednesdays from June 20 through Sept. 12, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The market offers fruits, vegetables, plans, honey, crafts and more.

  • Location: Courtyard Banquets Parking Lot, 3S200 State Route 59, Warrenville, IL.
  • Hours: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

* The Geneva Green Market is held on Thursdays from 7 a.m until 1 p.m. starting June 7 and usually running through October. The Green Market’s mission is to offer locally grown produce and minimally processed products that originate from within 200 miles of Geneva; about half of the farmers plant within 20 miles of Geneva.

* The Downtown Elgin Harvest Market is held on Thursdays through from June 7 through Oct. 4. It is being held during new hours this year: From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. This year, the market is placing a special emphasis on local vendors selling mostly locally grown and produced foods, as well as education on sustainable practices for healthy living and a weekly feature on arts and artisans. 

  • Location: Old Library Parking Lot, 200 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin.

* The DeKalb Farmers Market is held on Thursdays from June 7 through Sept. 29 from noon until 6 p.m. It offers produce, flowers, herbs, wine, baked goods, soap and handmade crafts. The “Live Music Lunch Series” is held every Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m.

  • Location: On Van Buren plaza, 1/2 block north of Route 38, at the Corner of North 2nd and Locust, DeKalb, IL.

* The St. Charles Farmers Market is held on Fridays from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. from June 3 through Oct. 26. It is held rain or shine and offers produce, fruit, cheese, eggs, beef and goat meat, poultry products,  flowers, garden plants, honey, produce and foodstuffs. The market also offers gourmet food products, fresh baked bread, garden and landscaping products, jewelry, arts and crafts.  

  • Location: Outside the Baker Memorial United Methodist Church at 4th Avenue and Main Street (Route 64), St. Charles, IL.

* The Aurora Farmers Market is celebrating its 100th year at a new location, Wilder Promenade (the former Aurora Police Headquarters.) The market is hold on Saturdays from June 2 through Oct. 27 from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Aside from seasonal fruits and vegetables, Aurora’s Farmers Market showcases home-baked goods, fresh cut flowers, gourmet wines and cheeses; lawn ornaments; arts and crafts; a variety of cooking and kitchen items; food demonstrations featuring local chefs; blood pressure checks; and a wide array of entertainment from local artists. Children in pre-school through fifth grade can learn and play together in the Sprouts program on nutrition during each downtown market in June, July and August.

* The Batavia Farmers Market is held on Saturdays from June 16 through Oct. 27 from 8 a.m. until noon. It offers produce, flowers, fruits, breads, meats, eggs, gourmet mushrooms, sauces and herbs.

* The Sugar Grove French Market is held on Saturdays from  8 a.m. until noon through Sept. 25. It offers fresh food, drink, flowers, arts, crafts and jewelry.

  • Location: Sugar Grove Village Hall Parking Lot, 10 Municipal Drive, Sugar Grove, IL.
  • Hours: 8 a.m. to noon.

* The Yorkville Farmers Market is held on Saturdays from June 9 through Oct. 27 from 8 a.m. to noon. It offers farm-grown vegetables, honey, baked goods, coffee and more. 

  • Location: Town Square Park, S. Bridge Street (Route 47) at S. Main St., Yorkville, IL.
  • Hours: 8 a.m. to noon.

* The Wheaton French Market is held on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.. from April 21 through Nov. 10 It offers flowers, locally grown produce, jewelry, crafts and more.  

  • Location: Main Street and Liberty Drive in downtown Wheaton.
  • Hours: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

* The Geneva French Market is open on Sundays from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m from April 27 through Oct. 26. It offers fruits and vegetables and gifts in a European-style market.

  • Location: The Geneva Metra Parking Lot, the northwest corner of South and Fourth streets, Geneva, IL.

* The Discover Sycamore Farmers Market is held every Sunday from June 3 to Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. It offers fresh, locally grown produce, baked goods, flowers and cheeses.

* The Oswego Country Market is held on Sundays from June 3 through Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It features locally grown produce, naturally raised beef, pork, and chicken, delicious Wisconsin cheese, Michigan blueberries, and specialty food items. Selected crafters and artists will offer their wares, and volunteers from community groups will be on hand to promote their organizations.

  • Location: Main Street, between Tripp Insurance and the American Male store, Oswego, IL.
