‘Nutcracker’ Performances in Chicago and Its Suburbs

If you want to expose your children to the classic ballet “The Nutcracker,” there are are a number of opportunities both in Chicago and its suburbs during November and December 2017. Note that this guide is in chronological order, based on the dates of the first performances:

Weekend of November 24-26, 2017

 

BATAVIA: The Fox Valley Nutcracker production will feature students from more than 20 dance studios in the western suburbs as well as guest artists from the Joffrey Ballet. Performances at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre are Saturday, Nov. 25, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 26 at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $35 to $20 and can be purchased here.

 

HINSDALE: Salt Creek Ballet, which has studios in Westmont and Hinsdale, will perform “The Nutcracker” at Hinsdale Central Auditorium. Performances are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 25, at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 26, at 1 p.m. The cast will include 90 local dancers joined by guest artists. Tickets range from $15 to $45. JOLIET:  The Chicago Festival Ballet will perform “The Nutcracker” at Joliet’s Rialto Square Theatre. The sole performance is Sunday, Nov. 26, at 2 p.m. The choreographer is Kenneth von Heidecke and the principal dancers are mostly faculty at his Naperville-based school.  Weekend of December 1-3, 2017

 

DEKALB: The Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb will host performances of “The Nutcracker” by the Beth Fowler Dance Company of St. Charles and Genoa. Shows are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. Tickets bought before Nov. 27 are $20 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. CHICAGO: The Ruth Page Civic Ballet will perform its production of “The Nutcracker” on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors. BARRINGTON: The Barrington Youth Dance Ensemble performs “The Nutcracker” at Barrington High School Auditorium. GLEN ELLYN: The DeForest Dance Academy of Glen Ellyn will perform its production of “The Nutcracker” on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at WIllowbrook High School in Villa Park. Tickets are $15 and are available at deforestdance.com.

 

The Entire Month of December 2017

 

CHICAGO: If your family is up for a trip into Chicago, the Joffrey Ballet performs a lavish version of “The Nutcracker” at various times for nearly three dozen performances, starting Dec. 1 and running through Dec. 30,  at the gorgeous Auditorium Theatre on Congress Parkway. This production is set before the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago and features the entire Joffrey company, along with 115 young dancers from the Chicago area. Tickets range from $30 to $115. Weekend of December 8-10, 2017

 

ST. CHARLES: The Beth Fowler School of Dance will perform “The Nutcracker,” on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 10, at 2 p.m. at St. Charles North High School. NAPERVILLE: DanceWest Ballet will perform its 24th annual production of “The Nutcracker” on Friday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 10, at 1 p.m. Performances will take place at Pfeiffer Hall on the North Central College Campus. Tickets range are $33 for adults, $25 for seniors and children They will be sold by the Pfeiffer Hall box office at 630-637-SHOW or you can click here to get to the ticket page. LAKE ZURICH: The Illinois Youth Dance Theatre will perform its 18th production of “The Nutcracker” at the Lake Zurich Performing Arts Center, featuring talented local dancers and professional guest artists. Performances are Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 10 at 3 p.m. Tickets range from $17 to $27. Find more info here.

 

Weekend of December 16-17, 2017

 

GLEN ELLYN:  The Chicago Festival Ballet will perform “The Nutcracker” at the McAninch Arts Center at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn. Performances are Saturday, Dec. 16, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 17, at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. The choreographer is Kenneth von Heidecke and the principal dancers are mostly faculty at his Naperville-based school. ELGIN: The Alma School of Dance will perform “The Nutcracker” on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. at Elgin Community College. Tickets range from $20 to $30. The Alma Dance School, located in Wheaton, bills itself as the only classical ballet school in Illinois based on the artistic yet very technical Cuban method of ballet.

 

NEW LENOX: Ballet 5:8 School of the Arts will perform its “Beyond the Nutcracker” on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 17, at 3 p.m. Lincoln Way West High School in New Lenox. This production features more than 100 student dancers and professional guest dancers in an original story about Emma, her uncle Abrahms, and the angel Anastasis on a once-in-a-lifetime Christmas adventure that leads her to the story of the first Christmas.
