Start planning those day trips – young kids ride free every day on Metra all summer long!

Up to three children ages 11 and under will be able to ride free on Metra with each adult this summer, through Labor Day. The deal is part of the commuter rail’s expanded “Family Fares” program.

Kids ride free on Metra all summer long.

“Let Metra take you to great destinations this summer so you can spend more time with your family and less time worrying about traffic and parking,” Metra Executive Director/CEO Don Orseno said in a press release. “Our $8 Weekend Pass and the fact that kids ride free all summer makes Metra the most affordable option.”

The Weekend Pass is good for unlimited rides on both Saturday and Sunday. It can be used in conjunction with Metra’s Family Fares. But if you choose to ride Metra on a weekday, the kids 11 and under will ride free then as well — older children and adults will just pay the regular rate, however.

Metra serves 241 stations in the counties of Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, McHenry and Kane; the system is 495 miles long! To check out detailed schedules for the Metra line nearest you, visit And look for Go West to publish some suggested daytrips along the Metra lines later this summer!
