Frost Gelato has an interesting backstory. It originally began in Tuscan, Ariz., with the help of Nazario Melchionda, a master gelato maker from Italy.
While he was in the United States working at the first Frost location, his visa expired and he was sent back to Italy. He was able to return to the U.S. to continue his work on an “extraordinary abilities” visa. Frost began to offer franchises and a pair of brothers brought the store to Illinois, after training for six weeks with Nazario.
Their Frost Gelato in downtown Naperville is located at 50 S. Main St. and is open Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. You could combine a trip to Frost Gelato with a trip to the Riverwalk, Naper Settlement or one of the free programs offered by the Naperville Public Library’s Nichols Library.
Frost offers a huge selection of flavors that are made fresh daily in store. They have all the usual favorites like chocolate and mint chocolate chip, but they also have a lot of seasonal flavors. I got half dark chocolate and half Lotus Cookie and it was amazing. I love dark chocolate, the darker the better. This was a really rich, dark chocolate with little bits of chocolate bar in it. Lotus Cookie is a European cookie with a hint of cinnamon and it was so delicious.
I’ve been there several times and the employees are always extremely friendly and happy to answer questions and take time letting us sample flavors. They have a wide variety of dairy free sorbets and gelato flavors with no sugar added.
Besides offering scoops of gelato, Frost also has a variety of coffee and other speciality items. I’m curious to try their Sorbettini, sorbet blended with Pellegrino or their GeLatte, a milkshake made with espresso.
