Halloween Candy Buyback Programs in Chicago’s Far Western Suburbs

Tuesday, Nov 1st, 2016 by

Are you ready to get rid of that too-tempting Halloween candy? Well, you could always freeze it like my mom did when I was a kid, then nibble away at it yourself until your kids remember in February that you froze their Halloween candy and sneak into the freezer to find it all gone. But I’m not bitter. (Really, Mom, I’m not!)

Probably a better option is Operation Gratitude, which sends candy to U.S. troops. If you want to send the candy yourself, it must be shipped by Nov. 15 to a California address. There are a number of “do’s” and “don’ts” to make sure the candy reaches its destination safely; you can find detailed instructions here. And the program really appreciates when families take the time to write a letter to the troops. Here’s some tips on how you can go about that.

But a number of dentists, businesses, schools and community groups around the country also “buy back” the candy and then take care of shipping it themselves to Operation Gratitude. Others just accept the candy as a donation to the troops.

Here is a list of participants we could find in the far western suburbs. Please call the individual organization (or check their Facebook page) to find out when they’ll be accepting candy and any other details. If you know of others we should feature here, please note in the comments!
