This park is a little bit further away from Go West’s coverage area, but if you’re in the Downers Grove area running errands or visiting family or friends, it’s definitely worth a stop!

Name and address/location of the park and what park system it belongs to:

Washington Park is part of the Downers Grove Park District. It is located at 835 Prairie Avenue in Downers Grove.

Is the parking nearby?
Yes, there is a parking lot at the park.

Can you describe the playground? Anything special it offers?
When you arrive there is a large gate around the park and a big fountain at the entrance. It’s a really nice, well kept park with a lot of trees and plants around. Each area of the playground has separate fences around it. There aren’t any really unique pieces of playground equipment, but it has all the basics and plenty of space to run around.

What type of playground surface? Cushion, mulch, sand, etc?
Mulch

Is there a separate playground for toddlers?
Yes, the toddler section is in a completely separate area, and there is a fence around it.

Is there a paved trail or path good for walking or riding bikes and scooters?
There is a sidewalk that goes around the park. I think it would be suitable for a toddler to ride a tricycle or a younger kid on a scooter but it wouldn’t be somewhere to ride a 2-wheeler.

What was your child’s favorite part of the park? Least favorite?
Their favorite part was definitely the fountain. There was always a large group of kids around the fountain and there was a lot of splashing and they ended up pretty wet. There wasn’t anything they didn’t like!

What was your favorite part? Least favorite?
It’s a really pretty park, there’s a lot of plants and flowers and it’s just a nice place to spend the day. We met a bunch of friends here, and the adults all enjoyed the shade while the kids ran around the park for hours. I wish there was an actual onsite bathroom instead of needing to walk to the port-a-potty. However, the port-a-potty was relatively clean.

Does it seem like a park that might be especially crowded at certain times of day
We spent a really long time here, and there were consistently a lot of other kids but it never felt overly crowded.

Are there public bathrooms?
There is a port-a-potty but it’s located a little bit down the block. You have to exit the actual park and walk to it.

Is there shade over the playground? Is there shade for a picnic?
Most of the actual park is in the sun, but there is an area of picnic tables with shade over them. We packed a lunch and it was a great park for a picnic.

What ages to you feel this park is best for?
I think it’s great for most any age. The toddler area completely separate so you can bring younger toddlers and not have to worry about bigger kids. There’s also a large field that older kids could play soccer or catch at.

Can you describe your family’s experience a bit?
We met a bunch of friends here in the morning and stayed through lunch and into the afternoon. It worked out to be a good central location for all the different people coming from various suburbs.

The fountain was the biggest draw for my children and all the other kids at the park. Next time we go here I will definitely pack an extra set of clothes and towels. The fence around the park is nice because it does make it easier to watch multiple kids.

This was a great park for different ages because there’s plenty of space for running and climbing, but there isn’t anything that’s really tall or too difficult. Plus it has the added benefit of the completely separate, fenced-off toddler area.

Washington Park was a really nice surprise, and we will definitely stop by again next time we are in the Downers Grove area.
