The latest in our “Great Stops!” series is Fairview Park in St. Charles, featuring a brand new, colorful playground. Located just east of Randall Road, it makes for a great spot to let the kids burn off some energy in between you running errands at stores like Costco, Meijer and Lowe’s.
Name and address/location of the park and what park system it belongs to:
Fairview Park is part of the St. Charles Park District. It is located at Oak and South 19th Street (behind BMO Harris bank off Randall and Oak). It does not have a parking lot, just street parking.
Can you describe the playground? Anything special it offers?
This is a brand new playground. It is a bright, colorful, whimsical looking playground with unique equipment.
What type of playground surface? Cushion, mulch, sand, etc?
Mostly mulch, though there is cushion under the swings and a cushion hill to climb.
Is there a separate playground for toddlers?
Is there a paved trail or path good for walking or riding bikes and scooters?
What was your child’s favorite part of the park? Least favorite?
Both of my children LOVE this park. Their favorite thing, and mine too, is an awesome two-person swing. I’ve been to many parks and never seen one like this before. It has a baby swing and a regular swing attached and facing each other. You can get this swing going very high (if you like). I’ve never heard my kids laugh so hard or squeal with such delight as when they are on this swing. The only complaint my children have is that everyone wants to play on the two “cool swings,” if there are lots of kids at the park it can take a while to get a turn.
What was your favorite part? Least favorite?
It’s a great little park, but it is just a small neighborhood park so it does not have the amenities (like bathrooms) of a larger/community park.
Does it seem like a park that might be especially crowded at certain times of day?
I drive by this park almost every day because it is near my daughter’s school. Before they remodeled it, it was a sad little park that never had children playing in it. Since the remodel I’ve never not seen children playing!
Are there public bathrooms? Is it indoor plumbing or a port-a-potty?
No bathrooms of any kind. It is a recent remodel, so they may still add a port-a-potty. It’s close to Randall Road so in a real emergency there are lots of stores and restaurants within a couple minute drive.
Is there shade over the playground? Is there shade for a picnic?
There is not much shade over the playground. There are some larger trees at the periphery. You could have a picnic on a blanket under a tree. There are currently no picnic tables, they may still be planning on adding some. There is a single bench, but no pavilion or any good place to have a picnic, other than the ground.
What ages to you feel this park is best for?
This park has something for kids of all ages. Older kids like the different kinds of swings and the big ropes and other climbing structures. For younger kids there are a couple bridges, a hill to climb, and a little hideout hut. There is only one slide, medium size.
Can you describe your family’s experience a bit?
My kids were so excited when they saw a new playground was being built, and that excitement continued to build as we watched this colorful playground evolve. They could not wait until it was done to take the first visit and it did not disappoint! While it is certainly not the largest park in the area, it has quickly become their favorite.
