Gusty spring days and kites just go together like peanut butter and jelly. Here’s a guide to kiting festivals and events this spring in Chicago’s western suburbs, as well as a couple in the fall, too. Know of one we don’t include here? Please note it in the comments.
GO FLY A KITE
The Wheaton Park District’s Go Fly a Kite event will be held in Wheaton’s Graf Park on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Chicago Fire Kite Team will be performing demonstrations at noon and coordinating a number of kite flying activities for participants. You can bring your own kite from home, or purchase one at the event. Concessions will be available. This is a free event, and here’s a detailed schedule.
CHICAGO KIDS AND KITES FESTIVAL
The 19th annual Chicago Kids and Kites Festival is being held on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Cricket Hill in Chicago’s Lincoln Park at Montrose and Wilson. This is a free event and children will be provided with free kite kits to build, decorate, and fly (while supplies last). The Park Ridge Park District is hosting its Kite Fest on Sunday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hinkley Park at 25 Busse Highway. You are invited to enjoy a day of good old-fashioned kite flying and picnicking with family and friends. Bring your favorite kite or purchase one on site. Watch kite flying demonstrations from Chicago Kite Company along with music, concessions, inflatables, and games. Admission is free; however, some activities may have a small fee. FOX VALLEY PARK DISTRICT
On Saturday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to noon, the Fox Valley Park District is hosting a Family Kite Day at Prisco Community Center in Aurora. Kites will be provided and the cost is $3 per person. Children 2 and under are free. Find more info here.
KITE FLY AND TOUCH-A-TRUCK
The Bloomingdale Park District is hosting a free “Kite Fly and Touch-a-Truck” event on Saturday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to noon at Springfield Park. Bring your own kites, or kites will be available to purchase. There will be a touch-a-truck event, too. Find more information here.
AURORA KITE FESTIVAL
The 2nd annual Aurora Kite Festival, originally scheduled for May, got rained out. Its rescheduled date is Saturday, June 3, from 10 a.m. to noon behind Jake’s Bagels on Broadway near RiverEdge Park. This is a free, all-ages event. Find more details on the Facebook event page.
FRONTIER KITE FLY FESTIVAL
The Naperville Park District is hosting the 11th annual Frontier Kite Fly Festival on Sunday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Frontier Sports Complex in Naperville. There will be music, kite demonstrations, face painting, and more. The event is free but in the past there has been unlimited inflatable jumping for $5. Bring your own kite. BACK TO SCHOOL FEST
The Geneva Park District is hosting a “Peck Farm Park Back to School Fest” from 11 am. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, at Peck Farm Park. While this is not officially a kite festival, families are urged to enjoy the outdoors, fly kites, play games and more. Find more info here.
The DeKalb Kite Festival is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. at Northern Illinois University’s North 40 at the corner of Lucinda and Kishwaukee Drive in DeKalb. There will be giant inflatable kites, dancing kites and fighting kites, as well a kite candy drop and kite-making crafts for kids. You can bring your own kite or make one at the festival. Food and beverages will be available for purchase as well as kites. While the event is free, parking is $3 (cash only.) Find more info here.
